Sleep Appliances

Did you know that one in every four adults in Canada has some form of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB)? However, 85% of people with significant and treatable sleep apnea have never been diagnosed. This can lead to snoring, excessive day-time sleepiness, poor concentration and irritability.

When your airway collapses during sleep, this is called obstructive sleep apnea. This lowers the amount of oxygen that gets to your brain and causes you to wake up briefly. The combination of the diminished oxygen and waking up repeatedly leads to the day-time problems listed above. But more importantly, untreated sleep apnea raises your risk of serious health problems such as:
  • High blood pressure and heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Diabetes
  • Diminished cognitive performance
  • Weight gain
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Erectile dysfunction

Obstructive sleep apnea can sometimes be treated with lifestyle changes, but in many cases a more interventional approach is required. A CPAP machine may be prescribed, which provides continuous air pressure through a facemask, preventing the airway from collapsing, but CPAP has several disadvantages. It can be uncomfortable to wear, particularly if you change positions at night. It is noisy and can disturb your partner’s sleep. It is inconvenient to use when you are traveling. And it requires regular care and maintenance to keep it clean and germ-free.
Another effective form of treatment for Sleep Apnea is Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT), which is the approach that can be provided to you in our office by Dr. Bohay. Dr. Bohay is a specialist in Dental Sleep Medicine, and has studied Obstructive Sleep Apnea and its treatment with Oral Appliance Therapy. She is an American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM) qualified Dentist, has been certified by the Academy of Clinical Sleep Disorders and Disciplines (ACSDD) and is writing her board exams in May to become a Diplomate of the AADSM.
Dr. Bohay works at a Sleep Clinic alongside Sleep Medicine physicians in downtown Toronto, but also provides these services to our patients here in Mississauga. She uses a highly accurate type of sleep test called a MATRx sleep study to decide if an OAT is right for you, and determine where your jaw should be positioned to give you the maximum effectiveness from your appliance. The MATRx test saves time and avoids unnecessary expense, allowing you to get back to restful sleep sooner.
